College Success Resources for Faculty: Basic Skills Initiative

Basic Skills Initiative @ MPC

Basic Skills at Monterey Peninsula College

At MPC, we promote and support student success in many ways, including basic skills instruction, programs, and services such as counseling, learning centers, tutoring programs, and informational technology. In the CCC environment, "basic skills" are defined as “those foundation skills in reading, writing, mathematics, learning skills, study skills, and English as a Second Language which are necessary for students to succeed in college-level work.”

MPC's "basic skills" courses are typically offered in the areas of reading, writing, math, learning skills, study skills, English as a Second Language, and information literacy, and are at levels below college-level or transfer.  However, students who might assess into these courses are found in all disciplines, and at all course levels.
