OER/ZTC Programs on Campus

OER Adoption ($1200)

Description of Activities: An adoption project includes the identification of existing ZTC and/or OER materials that would be suitable for the course under consideration; 

reviewing those materials to ensure they are in line with course outcomes and student success, and have the quality and rigor to maintain the integrity of the course; and selecting and adopting the ZTC or OER material.

Criteria and Expectations:

  • Must be a new course (not previously or currently OER/ZTC)
  • Faculty member has an OER text that is in line with the course outcomes.
  • Faculty will meet with OER Lead during the semester, according to the timeline provided below.
  • Faculty will evaluate and review the text to ensure quality, accuracy and reliability.
  • Cal-GETC/IGETC transferable courses will be prioritized. 

Maximum of two faculty can work on the same project. The $1200 stipend will be split between them. 

Approximate Time Commitment: 10-20 hours

Deliverables: 

  • Completed OER Basics and Accessibility Basics Training in Canvas. 
  • Met with Renee Vincent (OER Lead) three times for project check ins.
  • Selected and Adopted a ZTC/OER material to replace publisher textbook(s). 
  • Up-dated course description to reflect ZTC in course catalog.

Adapt/Remix OER: ($2000)

Description of Activities:

Adaptation of existing OER can include; remixing (combining two or more openly licensed materials into one resource), editing existing materials, removing or revising sections/chapters. Its recommended instructors use Libretext for remixing materials, but not required. 

Approximate Time Commitments: 25-40 hours

Maximum of three faculty can work on the same project, and have the stipend split evenly between them.

Criteria and Expectations:

  • There must be significant remixing, or editing of two or more OER materials that are combined into a unique OER Textbook.  
  • Faculty member has an OER text that is in line with the course outcomes.
  • Faculty will meet with OER Lead during the semester, according to the timeline provided below.
  • Faculty will evaluate and review the existing and new text to ensure quality, accuracy and reliability.
  • Cal-GETC/IGETC transferable courses will be prioritized.

Deliverables: 

  • Complete OER Basics Training and Accessibility Basics Training through Canvas.
  • Libretext Training (if needed)  
  • Meet with Renee Vincent three times for project updates
  • Record activities and time spent on the remixing or editing process. 
  • Complete the new OER Textbook with appropriate Creative Commons Licensing and upload to Libretext according to the timeline. 

Creating New Supplemental Materials ($1,000-$1,500)

Description of Activities:

This section is for instructors who currently use OER/ZTC materials in their course, but need to up-date or add supplemental materials to provide relevant/ reliable content to their students. 

Supplemental materials can include test banks, PowerPoint presentations, videos, images, lectures, lab manuals, and other supplemental materials. Maximum of two faculty can work on the same project.

Approximate Time Commitment: 15-30 hours

Criteria and Expectations:

  • Complete Accessibility Basics Training through Canvas. 
  • The proposed course must be currently taught using OER/ZTC material. 
  • There must be a genuine need to up-date or create new supplemental materials for the course.
  • Cal-GETC/IGETC transferable courses will be prioritized.

Deliverables:

  • Complete Accessibility Basics Training
  • Met with Renee Vincent three times for project check in.
  • Keep a detailed log of what new materials were created including the OER/ZTC Textbook the materials were created for.
  • Submit examples of the supplemental materials. 

OER/ZTC Refresh ($1000)

Description of Activities: 

Available for courses that are currently OER/ZTC. One or all of the following criteria can be used to justify an OER/ZTC refresh project. The course must be part of the Cal-GETC, IGETC, or MPC GE sequence or part of the LPPS-AA-T or Psychology AA-T pathways.

Maximum 2 faculty for a refresh project. 

Approximate Time Commitment: 15-25 hours

Deliverables:

  • Accessibility Basics Training
  • Libretext Training (if needed)
  • Provide a detailed log of changes made to the OER/ZTC material.
  • Meet with Renee Vincent three times for project updates.

Minimum Criteria for a refresh:

  • Course has been using OER/ZTC material for 2+ years. 
  • The OER/ZTC material is 5+ years old.
  • Significant changes have occurred in the field, including new research, relevant findings, etc. 
  • Up-dating textbook examples or case studies to reflect a modern perspective/outlook.

Authoring New OER Material: up to $7500

Description of Activities 

Culminating project deliverable is the Authoring of original OER content to replace a traditional textbook/resource to implement in your ZTC course as well as share with the greater OER community. Author OER results in production of new and original Creative Commons licensed material. (up to 4 faculty can work on the same project)

Time Commitment: 40-60 hours

This could be a multi-semester project, where you work with the ZTC lead to develop a project timeline. 

Qualifications:

For your project to be considered you must demonstrate there is a need to develop a new OER textbook. Whether there is a gap in the availability, outdated material or material that does exist doesn’t meet the SLO’s of the course.  

Activities may include: 

  • Identify and review existing OER materials relevant to your course content. 
  • Consultation with OER discipline experts regarding existing OER quality issues.
  • Work with the ZTC project lead to develop a work plan to create materials and ensure they are accessible and suitable for your course.
  • Authoring new and original OER material(s) to be implemented as a primary course resource in your no-cost to students (ZTC) course(s) (e.g., textbook replacement, custom reader, workbook, lab manual, & etc.) 

Deliverables:

  • Complete Accessibility Basics Training
  • Met with Renee Vincent several times for project check in.
  • Keep a detailed log of what materials were created, chapter outlines etc.
  • Submit the completed textbook and
